The Low Place
The Circle We Make gathers fifteen paintings that hold the physical and emotional thresholds of birth and early motherhood. These works are made on both silk and raw canvas, each material chosen for the way it receives pigment - canvas holding tighter, grounding the mark, silk seeping and dispersing, light in its nature. The series moves between abstraction and figuration, letting forms emerge through repeated washes of colour. Edges are left soft, as if in deference to the body's own edges in times of change. Some shapes anchor - a curve like the arch of a back, a dark pool like shadowed hands - while others dissolve, suggesting the way memory and sensation blur in moments of exhaustion, closeness, or surrender.
These paintings trace the acts of holding and being held, the weight of a newborn pressed to the chest, the emptiness in a bed still warm from rest, the quiet between contractions, the unseen threads that tie us to one another. They speak to the village that is sometimes absent, sometimes built from scratch - the circle we make when none is given. Each work is both record and offering, a place where touch, colour, and breath settle into form. Together, they map the intimate terrain of arrival, endurance, and care.
